Capacity Building

1.      AFDC experience

AFDC has a long experience record in conducting various types of capacity building programs aiming to achieve better management of natural recourses, raising environmental awareness amongst different groups, upgrading local communities' skills to foster sustainable development, as well as trainings on disaster risk reduction and management, 

emergency prevention and preparedness, emergency response, and post disasters early recovery.

Among stakeholders AFDC addressed through its capacity building activities and initiatives are:

·         Farmers and land owners

·         land managers

·         schools and universities

·         NGOs and CSOs

·         youth groups, local volunteers, schools, universities, public entities, ministries and ministerial directorates...

With the purpose of advancing skills of stakeholders within localities, local communities and public entities, AFDC conducted many training activities throughout its long professional history:


Forest Fire Management

 .    Since 1998, AFDC conducted forest fire management training workshops for more than 600 volunteers from  identified areas prone to forest fires.

·         AFDC conducted advanced trainings for more than 150 LAF and civil defense members on forest fire management and Incident Command system in coordination with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities.

The above mentioned training activities included:

·         Utilization of manual tools in forest fire fighting

·         Techniques of rapid intervention during early fire stages

·         Basic and advanced measures in prevention, preparedness, and intervention

·         Essential fire mitigation measures, incident management, coordination skills and tools, in  addition to personal and group safety measures


Reforestation and land restoration

  AFDC is one of the most well-known NGOs for its rich experience in reforestation and land restoration. Its professional record in this domain is not limited to traditional plantation activities. AFDC's approach is rather a holistic and scientific one that begins from site identification, eco system assessment, assessment of land cover, history of degradation and degeneration, in addition to identifying land use patterns, land owners, land managers, and local decision makers.

  AFDC owns and operates 6 big tree nurseries in different Lebanese regions.  

  As such, AFDC accumulated high experience in conducting training and capacity building activities on:

·         land restoration measures

·         Seed collection and germination

·         Seedlings Production & propagation techniques

Achieving successful and well-managed out planting projects is a complex procedure that involves various interests that are sometimes conflicting. Starting from land owners to land users and beneficiaries, local authorities and other stakeholders, the process of obtaining consensus building on big reforestation projects requires a multitude of skills. therefore, AFDC developed capacity building program that includes:

·         Site Identification and Assessment

·         Stakeholders Analysis

·         On-Site Restoration techniques

·         Developing Sustainable Site Management Plans  


Eco Tourism

 Within its Nature Conservation program, AFDC has been giving concentrated care to eco tourism potentials in several areas well-known for their natural and cultural heritages. A basic pillar for achieving a well-designed ecotourism product is having trained and skillful human recourses operating the activities and running the scene.

AFDC's capacity building expertise in the domain of ecotourism have been developing and building up since the year 2000 through:  

·         Planning and conducting training activities for local entities and volunteers on eco tourism planning, product development, identification of major attractions, sustainable destination management, viable ecotourism business planning, integrating marketing tools into ecotourism projects, involving host communities in ecotourism activities, and involving community leaders in decision making processes.

·         Conducting training activities for local entities and volunteers involved in operating eco tourism activities on tour guiding, management of tourist groups, identification of local natural and cultural heritages, and performing carrying capacity assessments.

AFDC had successful eco tourism experiences in Ramlieh & Dmit in Mount Lebanon, where it trained a group of individuals who are currently running eco tourism activities.


 Within its eco tourism initiative, AFDC recently launched its "Team building and personal development activities", providing capacity building on team building and personal development within an outdoor, environmental friendly context. This program addresses NGOs, private sector, and ecotourism groups. Such activities incorporate fun with learning and skills advancement.



  Rural development

Based on local assessments performed on state of rural economies, AFDC conducted several training workshops aiming to initiate and operate agro production facilities with the purpose to alleviate poverty and create income recourses for different social groups, especially women and farmers in remote areas. Among successful projects are Qernayel (Mount Lebanon), Ramlieh (Mount Lebanon), and Kouekh (North Lebanon).


Environmental Education & Awareness:

 AFDC Capacity building experiences within this program include, but are not limited to the following:

·         Training schools personnel on integrating environmental activities within school programs through curricular and extracurricular activities.

·         Training schools personnel on integrating  environmental topics within school curriculums  

·         Training school teachers and higher managers on developing environmental strategies within their schools in order to achieve high environmental standards throughout the educational path.

Forest  Fire Management Tools and Techniques

This type of training aims at enhancing local, regional, and national involvement in managing forest fires and mitigating forest fire risk. It is significant to involve the right stakeholders in forest fire management and prevention. Hence, AFDC is coordinating with various entities to develop an effective response to wild fires on local, regional, and national levels. This training course comes in the framework of AFDC’s strategy of developing the capabilities of different stakeholders and providing them with proper needs and skills to tackle forest fires, minimize their risks, and enhance coordination among them.

Local volunteers, municipalities, municipal guards, Lebanese Army Forces, Lebanese Civil Defense, concerned NGOs. 

Integration of environmental concepts within academic subjects

This capacity building program aims to develop teachers' skills and abilities to build up environment proficient students that are capable of:

·         Investing basic acquired environmental concepts

·         Identifying environmental problems or estimating them within their near and far surroundings

·         Pointing out and determining positive and negative impacts of environment-related factors through investigation and self-evaluation

·         Developing procedural skills related to viable solutions for environmental issues.


Teachers, Academic Personnel

Integrating extracurricular activities related to environment within academic path

Extracurricular activities are those performed by students but fall outside the field of the normal curriculum of school education. Students might organize and direct these activities under school's supervision. These activities aim to enhance among students their knowledge of their natural surroundings, precious environmental values, cultural and natural heritages.

Extracurricular activities include but are not limited to:

·         Environmental Clubs

·         Environment Based competitions

·         Floral assessments

·         Land cover and soil assessments

·         Learning about sustainable and traditional industries such as soap making and paper recycling...

Approach to disaster management

Lebanon is continuously threatened by natural and human-caused disasters. These disasters have a significant impact on infrastructure and mobility of population. They also impede development plans of national institutions and ministries. This training program aims at:

·         Developing organizational mechanisms to manage disasters and emergencies on local levels

·         Activating municipalities' role in management of disasters and crises that arise at local levels

·         Having municipalities prepared on technical and human levels to interfere in handling the consequences of disasters and crisis

·         Building local capacities in the various phases of disaster and crisis management (preparedness, response, and early recovery)
